Inlays & Onlays

Inlays and onlays are custom restorations used to repair teeth that have more damage than a small filling can predictably restore, but may not need a full dental crown.

They are often made from strong, tooth-colored ceramic and are bonded to the tooth to restore strength, function, and appearance. An inlay fits within the chewing surface of the tooth, while an onlay covers one or more cusps when more tooth structure needs support.

When are inlays or onlays recommended?

An inlay or onlay may be a good option when a tooth has a larger cavity, an older filling that needs replacement, or a cracked or weakened area that still has enough healthy tooth structure to preserve.

Compared with a full crown, an onlay can sometimes allow us to conserve more natural tooth structure while still protecting the tooth from further damage.

What is the process?

The damaged or weakened portion of the tooth is removed, and the tooth is shaped for the restoration. A digital scan or impression is then taken so the inlay or onlay can be custom-made for a precise fit.

Once the final restoration is ready, it is bonded securely to the tooth and adjusted for comfort, function, and appearance.

Is an inlay or onlay right for me?

The best option depends on the amount of remaining tooth structure, your bite, the location of the tooth, and your long-term goals. During your visit, we’ll evaluate the tooth and discuss whether a filling, inlay, onlay, or crown would be the most predictable choice.
