Sedation Dentistry
Sedation Dentistry
for Patients in Winston-Salem, NC & the Surrounding Areas
The dentists at Winston Smiles can help calm your fears about dentistry. We understand that going to the dentist may create anxiety for your child or yourself. We use different types of sedation based on what is necessary for your situation.
In certain situations, where you may be in the dentist chair for several hours or having surgery done, certain types of sedation will be used.
Types of Sedation Dentistry:
Nitrous Oxide (“Laughing Gas”): Mixture of oxygen and nitrous oxide that is given through a mask placed over your nose. This type of sedation will help you relax you and not cause any side effects to your heart, lungs, etc. This is one of the most common types of sedation used in dentistry.
General Anesthesia: This is also known as deep sedation and generally the patient will be unconscious during the procedure.
Oral Sedation: This type of sedation requires medication and is generally for patients that are going to be in the dentist chair for several hours or for several procedures. These pills will make you drowsy even though you will still be awake.
Depending on the type of sedation administered certain preparations are necessary.
- Your health history can affect how you are before and after the appointment. This could be if you are diabetic, a smoker or have other health conditions.
- Not Eating or drinking at least 6 to 12 hours before your sedation may be necessary
